I feel it is important to help clients see a direction there final product could go. When looking at a project I know the options are endless depending on what we are working with. The subject matter or goal of what we are trying to achieve. The mood or feel we are trying to establish. And ultimately the reaction we would like to have from the viewing of the finished project. In this example we are going to use a pair of silver hair stylist scissors. These in the end will be used for a background on a flyer.... Hit the " Read More " link to read more

In this test shot I put one light high, to the left, above and slightly behind me facing downward at the object propped up.
I need to see what I'm working with.
You will notice that this highly reflective object, even though we know it is mostly silver in color, it has a tendency to pick up other colors, shapes and shadows just like any other mirror like object. ( glass ware is another topic I will post on later as it is related )
So we have a few choices here on how to work with this.
If we want to keep the clean silver look we need to "cleanup" the surroundings and eliminate any color cast or object reflection as well as articulately add and position more lighting and bounce panels that will be neutral in color to the reflective surface as well as select a mat to place the scissors on that will not "add"anything. Therefore leaving the details to light and shadow in the end. There could be some sharp and stunning results. However, I chose not to do this on this project. I decided to use the naturally reflective surface artistically to create a feeling and atmosphere that the object might .. take to heart.
So we add a textured mat. A gold fill from card from the left and a black fill card from the right. Decide on a low key atmosphere. Some selective focus. A creative shooting angle. Position three lights into possition along with any appropriate bounce and/or diffusion and the object takes on a whole new character..... like magic.
In a nutshell anyhow.
The process is more trial and test untill we get the shot were looking for then fine tune in for the final image. The details would bore most clients that are just wanting some understanding.
For this project ... I felt it hit the mark just right.
The end results ? Remembering that this was a background and not a main image. Came out just like this.
This is not meant so much as an example of how to take a shot like this but rather a visual example with some workflow details to illustrate the project to clients who may be needing this kind of photography. However if you get more than that out of it then it was my pleasure.
